DE-SET is set to mark the 10th anniversary of Michal’s and Nastja’s creative journey. The intertwining of dance, live music and attractive visuals will include some of the motifs from their past performances, which, in addition to a lively interest in human intimate and social essence, thematise archetypal issues of the relationship between her and him, and the energy that feeds that relationship. This energy is love, is art, is electricity between them. With their own dance style, characterised by exceptional consistency, perfection of movements and strong expression, they have combined their memories and past stories in a new conceptual form, co-created with musicians of the duo Silence, vocalist Boris Benko and pianist Primož Hladnik, who also mark an anniversary this year, twenty years of their own joint creative journey.

SILENCE

Silence is a music composing duo consisting of Boris Benko (music, lyrics, and vocals) and Primož Hladnik (music and arrangements). The duo‘s discography consists of five studio albums and four soundtracks. They have scored several feature-length films and more than fifty plays and dance performances. Silence’s notable collaborators include directors Tomaž Pandur, Aleksandar Popovski, and Matjaž Pograjc. The duo collabora- tes regularly with Laibach. In 2006, they composed and produced Volk, Laibach’s 7th studio album. In 2015, Laibach and Silence became the first Western alternative acts to perform in North Korea. They rearranged a number of standards from Rodgers and Hammerstein‘s musical The Sound of Music for the occasion. The songs were released on Mute Records in 2018. The film Musicians from the End of the World (Glasbenika s konca sveta), directed by Haidy Kancler, candidly documents Silence‘s two-decade long career.

Dance and life fellow travellers Nastja Bremec Rynia and Michal Rynia, academically educated dancers, graduates of CODARTS Rotterdam Dance Academy, one of the most prestigious dance academies in the world, are renowned artists both nationally and internationally. With their artistic opus, choreographic and pedagogical work they significantly shape and enrich the cultural space of Slovenia.

Their work touches the seemingly impossible boundaries of dance, they have the highest references at European and world level, yet they find great pleasure in pas- sing on their knowledge to the younger generations, both at home and abroad. This year they celebrate 10th anniversary of their joint dance venture under the name MN Dance Company, and in these years they have produced an extremely large number of different artistic projects. Most important amongst those are definitely their author projects – full-length dance performances Dust in the Wind and The Myth and perfor- mances with an international dance troupe Room with a View, Urban Tales, Conspiracy of Silence, S/HE, Labyrinth, which they took to domestic and foreign stages, and many choreographic miniatures. They developed a distinctive dance idiom that intertwines various elements of dance – from ballet, hip hop to modern dance techniques, and named it contemporary fusion. Projects of feature shows offer an interesting mix of dance with theatre play and live musical accompaniment. They cooperate with SNG Nova Gorica and their full-length projects are also supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia. Also worth mentioning are their regular coproductions with Cankarjev dom in Ljubljana.

Their involvement in film is also important; together with their collaborators they have shot several short dance films, some of which have been awarded at international film festivals. Last year thea received awards from the City of Nova Gorica and the Municipality of Šempeter-Vrtojba for outstanding achievements in the field of contemporary dance, as well as for high-quality educational and communication activities that transcend the boundaries of the Nova Gorica cultural space.creative journey.
