In our search for completeness, happiness and fulfilment we often rely on the Other, the man or the woman next to us. We have a feeling that once, a long time ago, gods split us in two, and that ever since we’ve been relentlessly searching for our other half. We’ve hoped to find our own oneness in the ideal of the romantic love, in the perfection of the person with whom we’ve united our life, yet this continues to leave us alone, closed into our own loneliness and unattainability of such ideal in our everyday and earthly life. Perhaps the relentless search will one day bring us to our goal, and that other He or She will come to life around and inside us, merge with us to form an indestructible alliance; and perhaps we’ll then find that we didn’t, more than anything in the world, need to be loved by someone, but to love someone.
A performance that has not left me indifferent. A performance about love, being in love, loneliness, oneness, wholeness… A dance-theatre performance co-produced by the Slovene National Theatre (SNG) Nova Gorica and MN Dance Company.
With top dancers, live music, paraphrased texts by Brecht, Rumi … Zajc, Plato, Song of Songs … The opening movement of the excellent dancing couple, Nastja Bremec Rynia in Michal Rynia, that have, by the way, this summer pronounced the fatal YES, elicited an enthusiastic response even from those who know nothing about contemporary dance. Perhaps they found the inspiration for S/HE (ON/A) right there, at their wedding. Being in love. »Where am I?« she asks- »We are one, we have four feet and four hands, two faces.« When lovers are getting to know each other, when every touch is important, when they look at each other, when they explore every cell of the body, you can’t help enjoying the play of two bodies, a dance of two souls that want to become a WHOLE. Everything is new, everything is beautiful, searching for the other half of yourself, twin soul, this eternal desire of everyone born onto the Earth. Is it possible at all? To find a twin soul, create one being, create one whole? It turns out that it isn’t. Perhaps they will find each other somewhere else, in another world. Join and become an angelic one. They look for each other, long for each other, believe their love will be eternal. The dance of two bodies that represent a whole, ONE, is done so perfectly that one is convinced that perfect love, eternal love exists.
Then the stag party and wedding, with live music that reminded me of Pink Floyd and Mark Knopfler. An exceptional enrichment of a dance-drama performance, so different, so special. Something new in Nastja and Michal’s directing. I didn’t know them in this way. They were really surprising, not only to me but to others as well. And this is exactly what gives the performance a new dimension, something original. Rock music, singing and movement, inserts of drama take you to a known time which is past yet still alive, still here. At the very wedding, two friends fight, because of the bride, of course, which is certainly an ill omen.
The wedding does conclude with the dance of the two freshly weds, but a bitter taste remains. And then the dance of two LONELINESSES looking for and not finding each other. It ends with the loneliness of the ashes which is not loneliness, it is LONELINESS DEAD. The fall into the pit, the grave, ends with the bride saying: »I want to be born again, this time as a Whole.« The symbolic meaning is more than evident.
And then the rising from the grave, rebirth. Of what? Of the whole, of love, of one? The question I asked myself after this exceptional performance. Probably none of those things. At least not on Earth. Perhaps it is possible somewhere else, in the world of angels? Perhaps. Who knows? I don’t. I only know that Nastja and Michal thrilled me again, that they never disappoint, that they always do their best; Michal’s body completely soaked with sweat proves it as well as perfection of movement of everybody taking place in the performance.
You gave us an exceptional event, a lot of questions that a human being asks, but few answers. One must find one’s own.
We have not come to this world to be loved but to love, that would perhaps be the right answer. The public accompanied the performers from the stage with standing ovations, a reward for two months of hard work, sleepless hours, all with the purpose to prepare a major masterwork. You made it, dear artists. Thank you for a splendid evening. Extraordinary!
